Learn about the Android Device Configuration Service
The Android Device Configuration Service periodically sends data from Android devices to Google. This data helps Google ensure that your device remains up-to-date and is working as well as possible.
What data is collected
The Android Device Configuration Service collects information from Android devices, including:
Device and account identifiers
Device attributes
Software and security software versions
Network connectivity and performance data
Devices usually connect to the Android Device Configuration service every few days. Except for a few data points (e.g. Timestamps), the Android Device Configuration Service keeps only the latest copy of the information sent from your Android device, replacing previous data with new information when your device sends it.
What Google does with this data
We use the data we collect from the Android Device Configuration Service for various purposes, such as:
Help ensure that your device receives software updates and security patches
: For example, the security patch level on your device is used to determine if you need an update.
Make apps and services work consistently across a wide variety of Android devices with different specifications and software
: For example,
Google Play
may use attributes, like your screen layout, to ensure you're offered compatible versions of software.
Protect your device and the Android ecosystem from fraud, abuse, and other harmful behavior
: For example, to protect your account, we use device identifiers to help us detect suspicious login behavior.
Maintain aggregate metrics about Android devices
: For example, we use anonymized data about how devices connect to mobile networks to optimize the trade off between maintaining connectivity and preserving battery life.
Can I delete this data?
Because the data in the Android Device Configuration Service is critical to ensuring your device is functioning and updated properly, you can't delete the data if your device is in use. The Android Device Configuration Service follows
Google's Privacy Policy
.
If you sign out of your Google Account or delete it entirely on your Android device, the configuration information will no longer be associated with your Google Account. The Android Device Configuration Service will automatically delete your data after a period of inactivity.
